1836 Sduk Genoa Town Plan Map Italy Genuine Old Antique Wb Clarke Genova :
"Genoa, (Genova), (Genes), Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge."A map of the Italian City, engraved by BR Davies (imprint bottom right), and drawn, like many maps in the SDUK series, by WB Clarke. Clarke was an architect of note, who travelled extensively throughout Europe, and spent some years in Italy. Many of his maps show his interest in architecture, with images of the principal buildings along the bottom, as in the case of this map. There is also an inset map, a "Sketch of the Outworks" which were a series of fortifications which made use of the mountain ridges behind the town.
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was set up in 1826 under the auspices of Lord Brougham, the aim being to provide at a reasonable cost material for those self-taught, or unable to obtain a formal education. It published a large number of maps, ranging from countries to city plans.
This is a genuine antique map that would frame up nicely. It has lovely original handcolouring.
Size: the sheet measures approx. 42cms x 35cms.Condition:The edges are a little browned and creased, especially the top edge where the map was removed from an atlas. The map itself is in a good condition.
