$9.00

Exceptionally Rare and important, 1837 American Anti Slavery Newspaper titled \"Human Rights\" - this being a Memorial / Mourning edition reporting the death of the Reverend Elijah Parish Lovejoy - American Presbyterian minister, journalist, newspaper editor and abolitionist - who was murdered by a pro-slavery mob in Alton, Illinois, during their attack on his printing house to destroy his press and abolitionist materials. The issue offered here is dated December, 1837 and all columns are black bordered and THE ENTIRE content deals with the murder of Reverend Lovejoy at the hand of the Pro-Slavery mob.

This original 4 page newspaper measures 10 3/4” by 15 3/4” and is printed in 4 columns. \"Human Rights\" was published by the American Antislavery Society monthly and the issue offered here is designated \"Volume III, No. 6 / Whole Number 30\" was printed by R. G. Williams in New York City.

We have never encountered any examples of this very earl American Anti Slavery Society. It was published before the major split in the Society that saw the more radical abolitionists under William Lloyd Garrison take control of the organization while the more moderate faction formed the American & Foreign Anti-Slavery Society and those members who wished to pursue abolition through political means split to form the Liberty Party.

Of special interest here is the in depth coverage of the death of Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy. Elijah Parish Lovejoy (November 9, 1802 – November 7, 1837) was an American Presbyterian minister, journalist, newspaper editor and abolitionist. He was murdered by pro-slavery mob in Alton, Illinois, during their attack on his warehouse to destroy his press and abolitionist materials. Lovejoy\'s father was a Congregational minister and his mother a devout Christian. He attended Waterville College (now Colby College) in his home state of Maine. From 1824 until his 1826 graduation, while still an undergraduate, he also served as headmaster of Colby’s associated high school, the Latin School (later Coburn Classical Institute). He traveled west and in 1827 settled in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as an editor of an anti-Jacksonian newspaper, the \"St. Louis Observer\" and ran a school. Five years later, he studied at the Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey and became an ordained Presbyterian preacher. Returning to St. Louis, he set up a church and resumed work as editor of the \"Observer\". His editorials criticized slavery and other church denominations. In May 1836, after anti-abolitionist opponents in St. Louis destroyed his printing press for the third time, Lovejoy left the city and moved across the river to Alton in the free state of Illinois. In 1837 he started the \"Alton Observer\", also an abolitionist paper. On November 7, 1837, a pro-slavery mob attacked the warehouse where Lovejoy had his fourth printing press. Lovejoy and his supporters exchanged gunfire with the mob, which fatally shot him. He died on the spot and was soon hailed as a martyr by abolitionists across the country. After his death, his brother Owen Lovejoy entered politics and became the leader of the Illinois abolitionists.

This exceptionally rare and fascinating, 1837 Anti-Slavery Newspaper is in good to very good condition - complete and generally intact but with na significant separation at the central, horizontal crease of the front leaf with some minimal text loss. The Newspaper is age toned and water stained as can be seen in the scans below. The spine fold is sound and there is no indication that it was ever bound in a volume.
