Interesting 3 page stampless letter written by Orville Reed on July 14, 1837, at Cuyahoga Falls, OH, to his sister Rosella Reed Paige (addressed to her husband Leonard Paige) at Cleveland, OH. Letter measures approx. 7 3/4\" x 9 3/4\".

An Ohio merchant gives his sister an early report on the effects of the financial Panic of 1837.

Orville Reed, who is operating a store in Cuyahoga Falls, describes the impact of the financial Panic of 1837 on his business: \"dull times & scarcity of money is pretty much all that is talked about here Some charging it upon the Van Burenites & others upon the Whigs but that hard times do exist none pretend to deny.\" He relates that he is doing \"tolerable well have plenty to eat & drink & has thus far been able to meet all my engagements although business is not as good as I could wish some days it is very dull yet this the case all over the country.\" He has heard that the economic depression has been especially severe in their hometown of Lansingburgh, NY: \"it is very dull times there that there is nothing of any consequence doing in the way of business and that every thing looks gloomy.\" On a lighter note, Orville describes his lodging arrangements: \"I have fitted up a loging room in one part of my store in real old Bachellors style some of the ladies here have kindly furnished me with a bed & bed clothes untill I can get these necessaries from home.\"

Orville Reed (1810-1892) was the son of Kitchell Reed Jr. (1782-1867) and Sally Dibble (1787-1830). He grew up in Lansingburgh. After a short stay in Ohio, Orville moved back to Lansingburgh where he became a prosperous farmer. He married Elizabeth Allen (1813-1879) in 1838.

Leonard Paige (1801-1881) was born in VT, the son of Asa Paige (1767-1819) and Lydia Stewart (1767-1847). He married Orville\'s sister Rosella Reed (1811-1895) in 1829 in Lansingburgh. Leonard Paige was a farmer and was noted for his abolitionist activities in the 1840\'s in Oberlin, OH. See Reed-Read Lineage (1909) and Border War (2010).

Postal History: 30mm black CDS, CUYAHOGA FALLS O., with manuscript 10 cents rate mark.

Condition: age toning, hole where seal removed (affecting one word), row of small holes in page 3 (affecting 2 words), fold splits, small holes in folds, two small tears repaired with archival tape.
