This is, perhaps, the most famous Hard Times Token, “AM I NOT A WOMAN& A SISTER,” HT 81, Low 54. Thisexample has a very attractive copper-brown tone, and exhibits unusually sharpdetail. It is a rare piece of American history, and a true prize forcollectors.
The period ofeconomic hardship during Van Buren\'s presidency (the Panic of 1837) came to beknown as the \"Hard Times\". With America in a deep recession, peoplebegan hoarding coins as a safeguard, and small change disappeared from the marketplace.In response, merchants began buying tokens from private mints so they couldmake change in business transactions.
In late 1837 the American Anti-Slavery Society, located at 143 NassauStreet, New York, commissioned the firm of Gibbs Gardner & Co. ofBelleville, N.J. to strike copper tokens, including HT 81, the Kneeling Female.They were made of copper with a reverse similar to legal U.S. cents.
The lighter photographs help bring out the details, though the darkerphotos more accurately show the actual coin.
