Judge Samuel Nelson, who at that time was Chief Justice of
the New York Supreme Court.Samuel Nelson (1792-1873) had a long and distinguished career,
which culminated in a stint of twenty-seven years as a justice
on the United States Supreme Court, from 1845 to 1872.
This document MIGHT be signed at the top by Samuel Nelson.
On the other hand, this might not be his signature, but rather
the handwriting of one of the clerks.There is a definite similarity to authenticated examples of
Nelson\'s signature. However, I am now rather skeptical
that this is his autograph. I leave it to you to examine the
scans and to use your own judgment in this matter.
In any event, the document itself is certainly genuine.
The document is concerned with a case from Albany County. This document, which is partly printed and partly handwritten,
consists of three pages that are glued together at the top. The
page that is on top is the one that MIGHT have Samuel Nelson\'s signature.
This page is smaller than the other two, and obscures some of
the writing at the top of the second page. There is some writing
on the back of the two larger pages, but not on the back of the
smaller page.The document appears to be signed by a few of the other people
involved with the case.
The document is about 13\" by 8\". It is in good condition, with creases
