ON sale HERE is a great leather-bound 1844 era US edition, published by T.B. Peterson and Brothers, Philadelphia, containing both Nicholas Nickleby and Martin Chuzzlewit. 9x6 inches, bound in sheep leather with a black leather spine label lettered in gilt. Marbled page block, double column format, profusely illustrated with original prints. Nicholas Nickleby is 403 pages, and Chuzzlewit is another 320 pages. Minor edge wear, better than many sheep copies we have seen. To understand precisely what this is, you first have to know whom T.B. Peterson was. You could call him a pirate. But he also employed Edgar Allan Poe and put out one of the first women\'s magazines in America. He generally published Dickens classics just as the parts came off the boat, without being overly concerned about compensating the author. Because of situations like this, Dickens himself was instrumental in establishing a copyright law. So you can call this a first edition or a pirate, either way.
