It is a high style neoclassical pattern, with ornate Adamesque details under the monogram cartouche. It resembles a mirror ensemble from the Regency period. Ancestral was very popular, and was made well into the Depression. It tends to hold up well to use. The range of pieces is in the standard post WWI variety, with very attractive servers and holloware. Pie was a staple of old style cooking, served frequently and at most meals. By making a pie, the housewife could prepare a dish in advance, and count on the crust to preserve the ingredients for a while, a real consideration in the days before refrigeration. Frequently, old pies contained meat (chicken pot pie for example), and were served as the main course of a meal. Basically, this is a way of putting a stew in a crust, and having it keep for a day or so. The device for serving pie is a wedge shaped blade with handle; the older the pattern, the wider the blade. Around 1910, pie blades began to become narrower in line with changing diets and the advent of ice boxes.The pie or cake server with pierced blade offered here measures about 10 3/4\". This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 85 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is heel wear. The blade is pierced. The pattern is crisp and clear. This server has been carefully used and well cared for.I polish all silver before listing on .
