Up for sale is a large hand carved meerschaum bas relief plaque; thescene shows the Sacred Family: Saint Joseph, The Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus. Theframe is made of wood. The carving is intricate and very detailed. Meerschaumis a form of mineral known as sepiolite; it is sometimes found floating on theBlack Sea and is rather suggestive of sea foam (hence the German origin of thename, as well as the French name for the same substance, écume de mer). Thismaterial became very popular during the 19th Century due to itssoftness; as it was relatively easy to carve elaborate works of art. Meerschaumwas used mainly in religious themes but was also used for other types ofapplications; for instance, this material was extensively used in Tobaccopipes. This material is very delicate and fragile. The price is only for themeerschaum plaque and does not include the wood stand.
