Condition:

Rich tonal image, sharp and clean, light flaking to backing ink no damage to emulsion, hand tinting, passe-partout frame has remnant of original tapes on edges still holding partially along bottom edge and somewhat along lower sides but open at top edge, overall glass and faux tortoiseshell application in good condition with backing showing considerable aging/wear.

Other:

Uncommon early French ambrotype of elegant elderly woman with white bonnet and black dress with shoulder mantle. She holds a white handkerchief. Most unusual for the period, she is posed in front of a patterned cloth backdrop or screen while typically the background for this timeframe would be blank. This presentation adds an enhanced dimension to the portrait.
