Very rare and beautiful, 1850\'s Hand Blown, Etched Glass Pharmacy / Apothecary Diminutive Show Globe measuring 10 3/4\" tall and featuring a delicate, etched surface design.

This beautiful, Early American Blown Glass Show Globe measures approx. 10 3/4” tall and 3 1/4” in diameter at the base. It features an open pontil on the base, and applied neck ring and a pulled lip. The outer surface of the body of the Globe features a wheel etched floral design with flowers and leaves and the universal, conjoined \"Rx\" Apothecary / Pharmacy / Prescription symbol. The stopper is original, hand blown and features a matching, etched design on the surface. The stopper is hollow and can be filled with colored water from the ground base and sealed with a small cork.

The bottom of the base of the Show Globe features an open pontil and this Show Globe most certainly dates from the period 1830 to the late 1850\'s. While we have owned scores of Apothecary Show Globes over the past 37+ years, this is among the first hand blown example we have had the pleasure to handle and is definitely one of the earliest example we have ever come across!!!

A Show Globe is a glass vessel of various shapes and sizes containing a colorful liquid. It has been a symbol of pharmacy from the 17th century England to the early 20th century in the United States. It marked the drugstore or apothecary in much the same way as the barber\'s pole marked tonsorial establishments in some countries. People who were illiterate needed such symbols to locate these medical practitioners. In the late 19th and early 20th century Show Globes were also used to hold brightly colored, penny candy in a Candy Store or a General Store.

This outstanding, early to mid 19th century Hand Blown Show Globe is in good to very good condition - the base and body of the Globe is exceptionally well preserved with no damage or repairs of any kind. The glass is clean and clear. The matching stopper, however, has 2 cracks and a small chip at the base. It also has some very light clouding to the inner surface - we have made no attempt to clean the glass and do not know if this will clean up but it is invisible when the stopper is filled with colored liquid.

A very rare and stunningly beautiful, 1850\'s (or earlier) Hand Blown Etched Glass Pharmacy / Apothecary Show Globe measuring and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
