Postal History

Very nice one page but detailed letter written February 27, 1853 by Peter Rowe, a New York Congressman, who wrote from Washington DC.

He details how he was on a walk with \"Johnson of the Albany Argus (newspaper)\" up to the Jackson monument when, lo and behold, they encountered President Franklin Pierce walking in the same direction!

Times have sure changed. Presidents travel around Washington DC in highly secure motorcades now!

The writer talks about staying at the National Hotel in Washington DC while Congress is in session.

Here\'s a bio and photo of the writer - as found on Wikipedia.
