Dr. David Gochenauer was born September 18, 1843, in Shippensburg, PA. He died February 20, 1917, in San Diego, California,
Before attaining his majority, he joined company G, 202nd PA Infantry, and served with it throughout the Civil War, being twice wounded. He at first ranked as 1st Lt., but was later promoted to be Captain. After being mustered out of service, he entered to Medical Dept. of the University of Pennsylvania. He received the degree of MD in 1868, and for the next few years served in New York City. He was a student in the Yale School of Religion. He graduated in 1876. He was Pastor of a church in Ellis, KS for the next 4 years.
He then returned to the practice of medicine in New York City and then Socorro, New Mexico. Later in life he lived in San Diego, CA and was very active there. He organized and became president of the San Diego Rapid Transit Street Car Company. He built the Agnew Sanitarium in 1892.
CONDITION: Interior is sound. Rear cover is firmly attached. Front cover is becoming detached (could be repaired).

The son of Michael & Nancy Simon Gochenour. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, PA. In 1868, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and proceeded to Los Angeles, California, to begin his practice. He returned to Pennsylvania to marry Mary Lucinda Grove on May 5, 1870, in Abbottstown, Adams County, PA. In 1880, he and Mary resided in Ellis County, Kansas, and, by 1900, were living in San Diego. Death came as a result of heart disease.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 16, 1864, with Co. G, 202nd Pa Inf, at the rank of 2nd lieutenant. Promoted to captain on September 5 and honorably discharged with his company on August 3, 1865.
