1855-1870\'s CAST IRON SIGN FOR IVORYTYPING PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS, J. H. HINES:
$2000.00

Very rare cast iron sign for an Ivorytyping business. This sign would date circa 1855-1870\'s. Most likely it would date within the earlier years of that time framework. The sign is painted black with gold raised letters. It measures 12 inches wide by 5 3/4 inches tall. There is a hole on the midpoint of each end for attaching it to a wall or door. On the sign it reads in raised letters: \"J. H. Hines, Ivorytyping Done Here.\" We would love to know who J. H. Hines was & exactly where their photography business was located but we have not been able to find out anything about them. This sign turned up in a Pennsylvania estate. The paint is entirely original in all respects. Lots of the original paint is present. The overall condition is very good with some wear and chipping to the black paint and a small amount of rust in the lower left front corner & to the bottom right inside the oval.

Ivorytyping was a nineteenth century technique of printing photographs on artificial ivory or on glass rather than on paper or tin. The process of ivorytyping was developed initially by the daguerreotype artist J. E. Mayall in 1855. Images that are printed on paper, tinted, and then adhered to glass with the image side against the glass were also called ivorytypes.
