A superb colour pair of early Barbados sitting Britannica showing the Blue and
Pale Blue colours. Imperforate with lovely margins, no thins or tears.
Slight backside offset ink specks from stacked sheets. Anappropriate opening
page item for Barbados showing the less common #10 and #11 postmarks. Most
early Barbados stamp cancels will have some version of the #1, that being the Main
or General Post Office for the Island - St. Michael Parish or Bridgetown.
Cancel #10 is for St. Peter Parish and #11 is for St. Lucy (there were 11
numbered parish post offices). The style of these two cancels is type C-1,
the first of the Obliterators, as classified by Clarke, Radford & Cave in
their Barbados Post Office Markings to 1981 and
in use from 1852 to 1893, when they were replaced by the "Bootheel"
obliterators, type C-2 (also with Parish #'s). These are two of the Parishes
which have three bars above the number and four below.
