This sale is for an interesting antique silver medal with a (partial) Hebrew engraving. The engraving reads: \'Bereisjit - Ao. MDCCCLVII\' between laurel branches.
(Bereisjit is a Hebrew word, the first word of the Torah. It litterally means \'in the beginning\'. It is sometimes spelled as bereshit - beresjiet- beresjhit - bereishit etc.
A description and a picture of a similar medal can be found in the book: Dr Arthur Polak, Jewish medals in the Netherlands (1958), # 34. I have added scans of this description to the pictures. Please note that this book is not included in this sale.
The English description in the book reads: \'Engraved silver medal, with loop for suspension, issued in Amsterdam. Probably issued by one of the small synagogues to be worn by the Bridegroom of the Law\'.
Condition: good and undamaged. Material: silver or white metal, unmarked. Diameter: 37 mm. I guarantee age (1857) and authenticity of this medal, as described.
