MEMOIRS OF THE EMPRESS CATHERINE II WRITTEN BY HERSELF WITH A PREFACE BY A. HERZEN, is an autobiography of the Russian Empress known as Catherine the Great (1729-96). She was the longest ruling female leader of Russia (1762-96) and revitalized the country to become one of the recognized great powers of Europe. Catherine the Great\'s rule, the Catherinian Era, is considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire.
FEATURES: translated from French and published by D. Appleton & Co., NY. M.DCCC.LIX 1859; scarce first American edition; first print with date in Roman numerals on title page, no other printings mentioned, 309 pages. Brown pebbled cloth covers blind embossed with ornate symbols.
CONDITION: Faded gold lettering on spine. Front cover has spine cover attached to it, and this is detached from the book. Spine cover is torn. Front and back covers have light stains, corners and spine are bumped and frayed, slight lean. Inside front board is clean, back has pencil marks and slight staining. Pages are well tanned, some have small corner folds, and occassional sporatic small spots/stains (<10%.) Pics carefully are part of description and condition.
