A complete first boundedition of Chambers\'s famous encyclopaedia, with many plates of maps and replete with vignettes.
The Encyclopaedia was founded in 1859, and was published originally in 520 weekly parts at three-halfpence each. These then formed the ten volumes presented here. They include over 27,000 articles from over 100 authors. Also included within volume ten is the supplement, which included new and revised content.
It was partly a translation of the tenth edition of the German Konversations-Lexikon, but nevertheless it took the editor, Andrew Findlater, ten years to complete the project.
The Encyclopaedia became one of the most important in Englishof the 19th and 20th centuries, gaining a reputation for accuracy and scholarly exactitude. The Chambers publishing company was known for these qualities, and this -perhaps their most ambitious work -confirms them.
Each volume contains full colour maps, and the articles are illustrated with many mmonochrome vignettes.
A significant work within the popularisation of scientific understanding in the 19th century, and a comprehensiveview ofthat understanding such as it was at the time.

CONDITION
In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound, though with some rubbing to the extremities, corners, and spines. With marking to the boards. The front hinge of volume ten has failed, but the joint is still holding the front board firmly in place. The front hinge of volume nine is starting but still reasonably firm.The foredge of the fold-out frontispiece in volume ten is a little dusty and worn. Internally all volumes are a little age toned and a little cockled. All volumes are generally clean throughout, with light spotting being confined to the first and last few pages as usual. The title pagescarry a small personal booksamp. Firmly bound. Overall: GOOD
