This is a real find; a bound portfolio of Civil War era songs; piano and pianoforte sheet music with a good number of them relating specifically to the Civil War. Some of them have nice illustrated cover sheets too, and these are rather rare. I believe this portfolio is rather unique and likely privately compiled and bound. Great color title page with early Flags of the United States and France too. Here is what you will find in this portfolio:

  • THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER [1861 copyright/version]
  • WEEPING SAND AND LONELY, OR WHEN THIS CRUEL WAR IS OVER byCharles Carrol Sawyer & Henry Tucker [1863 copyright]
  • YES I WOULD THE WAR WERE OVER (Answer to \"When This Cruel War is Over\") by Alice Haworth [1863 copyright]
  • BREAK IT GENTLY TO MY MOTHER by M. A. Geuville & Frederick Buckley [1863 copyright]
  • DEAR MOTHER I\'VE COME HOME TO DIE by F. Bowers & Henry Tucker [1863 copyright]
  • URIELLA by H. P. Davis [1860 copyright]
  • GRAFTED INTO THE ARMY by Henry C. Work [1862 copyright]
  • RAW RECRUITS OF ABRAHAM\'S DAUGHTER As Sung with Great Applause by Bryant\'s Minstrels of New York [1862 copyright]
  • DE DAY OB LIBERTY\'S COMIN\' by G. F. Wurzel [1862 copyright]
  • HOW ARE YOU CONSCRIPT? by Frank Wider [1863 copyright]
  • OLD SHADY, OR, THE SONG OF THE CONTRABAND byBenjamin Hanby [1861 copyright]
  • MERRY IS THE GREENWOOD by C. Jeffreys & Stephen Glover (no copyright date)
  • HAPPY BE THY DREAMS by J. E. Carpenter & J. R. Thomas [1859 copyright]
  • THE BAY OF NAPLES Sung by Jetty Treffz, Composed byDonizetti (no copyright date)
  • THE MILKMAID AT THE SPRING by T. H. Hinton [1862 copyright]
  • I FORGET THE GAY WORLD by Marshall S. Pike & L. V. H. Crosby [1846 copyright]
  • NO ONE TO LOVE by William B. Harvey [1861 copyright]
  • LET ME KISS HIM FOR HIS MOTHER by John P. Ordway [1859 copyright]
  • WHEN THE MOON ON THE LAKE IS BEAMING by Stephen C. Massett [1853 copyright]
  • WAKE UP, MY OWN SWEET ROSE by Charles Churchill & George Linely (no copyright date)
  • I WATCH\'D THE DEW UPON THE GRASS by Jenny Lind & Henry Cimber [1850 copyright] Note: Jenny Lind was of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, she is known for her performances in soprano roles in Sweden and across Europe, and for an extraordinarily popular concert tour of America beginning in 1850. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music from 1840.
  • I\'VE BROUGHT THEE AN IVY LEAF by David Wood [1859 copyright]
  • POOR JUNA As Sung by Ossian\'s Bards, Music by Miss Armstrong [1856 copyright]
  • I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE MY NAME (A Few Lines Addressed to the Fraternity of Young Bachelors by Miss Ouri ( I think this one is signed by the composer) [1856 copyright]
  • ANNIE LAURIE (Traditional, no copyright date)
  • THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE (Columbia, Gem of the Ocean) (no copyright date)
  • WHEN STARS ARE IN THE QUIET SKIES (No composer credited; no copyright date)
  • NIAGARA FALLS by Mr. Winchell (no copyright date)

Surely, these were the \"Pop\" songs of the mid-19th century. Singer-Songwriters and composers like Charles Carrol Sawyer, Henry Tucker, Stephen C. Massett, Marshall S. Pike, Benjamin Hanby, Jenny Lind, G. F. Wurzel (George Fredrerick Root), Henry Clay Work were very popular at the time. In 150 years, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Madonna, et al, will be little more than footnotes in musical history. I cannot emphasize enough the rarity of this folio. There is probably not a duplicate of it anywhere. One further note- in-between the songs (most of which are several pages of sheet music and lyrics) there numerous advertisements for other songs. Not only a great Civil War collectible, but a scarce part of musical history.

BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: Folio- over 12\" to 15\" tall. Partially bound in leather over marbled paper hardboards, title in gilt on spine. Wear as would be expected- mostly ends, edges and corners but holding up nicely. Scattered foxing throughout, and a few small closed page tears but nearly Very Good. RARE. 10 1/4\" x 13 3/4\" x 1 1/8\"
