A very rare and fascinating, original 1860\'s CDV photograph of an identified Union Civil War artillery soldier, Corporal William S. Ostler, a member of Battery L (known as \"Reynold\'s Battery\") of the 1st New York Light Artillery. Offered with this CDV is a second portrait of Ostler in civilian clothing likely taken before he enlisted.
This CDV photo measures approximately 2 1/2 inches by 4 inches including the original square cornered card mount. The CDV features a full length portrait of corporal Ostler wearing a light colored overcoat and cape. Ostler stands in a photographer\'s studio holding his artillery sword in his right hand and its scabbard in his left. He wears a kepi with unidentifiable insignia on the top. The CDV does not carry a photographer\'s mark however there is a period manuscript inscription below the image that reads \"William S. Ostler\" as well as a matching inscription on the reverse that reads \"Reynolds Battery\".
The Civil War database returns the following information on William S. Ostler: Residence was not listed. Nineteen years old, enlisted on 10/22/1861 at Rochester, New York as a private. On 10/25/1861 he mustered into Battery L company, New York, First Light Artillery. He was mustered out on 10/24/1864. Promotions: Corporal.
This rare and original CDV, Portrait of a Union Civil War Artillery Soldier is in excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong, and the tonality rich. The photo is clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved while the mount has some light soiling and light edge wear.
