Wonderful and original, 1860\'s Primitive, tin Toleware Nutmeg Grater. This simple and very early Nutmeg Grater measures approx. 5 1/2\" long and 2 1/2\" at its widest point. It is made entirely of tin and features a hinged lid compartment at the base where the grated nutmeg could be collected for storage or use. The surface of the compartment and the tin back of the grating surface feature original japanning.
This wonderful Primitive Tin Nutmeg Grater is not marked in any way and a cursory search of the online Patent data base did not turn up the original design patent.
This early Tin Toleware Nutmeg Grater is in very good condition with some wear and loss to the surface japanning as can be seen in the scans below. Its simple and straightforward design assures the fact that the grater would work just as well today as the day it was manufactured.
