1860's Civil War Union General Thomas Crittenden Signed Cdv Photograph / Photo For Sale
Very Rare, original, 1860's, Signed CDV Photograph of Civil War Union Major General Thomas L. Crittenden. Crittenden was a major general in the Kentucky militia since 1860. At the start of the Civil War he remained loyal to the Union and was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in September 1861 and placed in command of the 5th Division in the Army of the Ohio. He led the division at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. After Shiloh he was appointed major general of volunteers and commanded the II Corps in the Army of the Ohio during the Perryville Campaign.
The Photograph itself measures approx. 2 1/8” by 3 3/8” and is mounted on its original, square corner, Card Mount (the mount measures 2 1/2” by 4”). The Photograph is signed by Crittenden who has autographed the Image on the back of the card mount with manuscript text that reads "Maj. Genl. Crittenden, Ky.".
This outstanding Signed CDV Portrait Photograph of General Thomas Crittenden came to us as part of a group of 1860's Civil War related CDV Photographs recently purchased from an estate in northEastern Massachusetts containing outstanding Portraits (some signed) of Civil War Soldiers, Officers and Political Figures. These Photographs are fresh to the market and we are proud to be offering these rare and in some cases important Albumen CDV's, without reserve, as part of our weekly sale.
This rare and wonderful CDV Photograph is in very good condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus strong contrast and rich tonality. The Albumen Photograph is generally clean and crisp and very well preserved but does have some spots of foxing (a remnant of the original printing out process) in the blank area around the portrait. There is a small edge chip to the albumen Photo at the top edge and some surface scuffing to the Photo near the bottom of the right hand edge (see the scans below). The Card Mount is slightly clipped at the corners and has some staining in the margins on the obverse. The Autograph is dark and bold and neatly executed.
