VERY rare and wonderful, original 1860’s Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype Photograph of two United States Navy / Union Sailors / Tars in uniform with an American Flag.

This fantastic, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 2 5/8” by 3 1/2”. The Tintype is a wonderful, full length, standing portrait of the two Seamen wearing regulation pants and tunic, lanyards (that likely terminates in a boson\'s whistles) and peak-less sailor\'s caps (often called \"Donald Duck Hats\"). Both of the Sailors are smoking cigars and there is a bottle of wine on a table between them. Also between them there is an American Flag on a staff that is inserted into what appears to be a naval artillery shell. The Sailor on the left rests his left foot atop a wooden barrel.

While we have handled a number of Images picturing Civil War Navy Officers and Sailors over the past 37+ years, we have seldom come across an image such as this that depicts two hard drinking, cigar smoking Sailors flanking an American Flag and a Naval Artillery Shell - a collection of elements that have become the stereotype of a US Navy Sailor!!

This rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of Union Navy Sailors is in very good condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Tintype is clean and crisp and well preserved. The surface is sound and stable although there is some surface crazing that can be seen when the Image is viewed at an acute angle to a light source. There is a thin scratch at the upper left hand corner and a few VERY shallow and unobtrusive bends to the substrate.
