The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, etc. London: G. E. Eyre & W. Spottiswoode, 1861.Scarce miniature pocket Civil War era New Testament, in its original blindstamped leather, with gilt title to the spine, as shown. Signed on the front EP by a Silas J. Whitney. Research shows that Silas, at the time of this Bible, was serving in the Civil War with the 40th Massachusetts Infantry, Company H (see below). Almost certainly that means this was a field carried Bible. Front board is sadly detached, but rear is secured. Pages within with some light toning and staining, the front EP detached, else all bound and in good shape. Gilt page edges. Nice little piece of history from the Civil War with near certain field time. Measures only 3.75\" x 2.25\". Good luck!
