1861 Civil War Certificate of Discharge Signed by General David Tompkins Van Buren, autographed on front and back.

Civil War Union BrevetBrigadier General. As a West Point graduate on July 1, 1847, he served in theregular Army as a 1st Lieutenant and fought in the Mexican War. He resigned onMarch 31, 1855, to pursue study becoming an engineer and lawyer. At theoutbreak of the rebellion, he was Captain of Engineers, in the 20th New YorkState Militia. Called to service, he was re-instated as a Major on the Staff ofMajor General John A. Dix and was promoted Colonel, Chief of Staff in June1862. He later served as Additional Aide-de-Camp and Adjutant General on thestaff of Major General Joseph Hooker. For faithful and meritorious services, hewas brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After thewar, he became an assistant professor of natural and experimental philosophy atthe U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
