We came from Upperville yesterday about 4 to a gap where there is a little village called Paris. We went up into the gap expecting to get at the rebs but they were too spry having crossed the Shenandoah and were in full retreat…We are in the Second Army Corps second division, Sulley’s Brigade, Gorman’s Division, Conch’s Corps. There is a tremendous force moving in Virginia now but I expect the rebs will get away from us. Soon after we start yesterday morning General McClellan and staff aver took us and passed our folks did not know him…he rode through hat off when they cheered him loudly. I think he looks older than the pictures of him represent him to be…

Soon after he went by General Burnside came by the other way and I should have known him anywhere. This is a fine country up this valley and as you come this way the buildings look better and the farms better cultivated…We are now surrounded by mountains and it is quite romantic. We can see down to Bull Run and all about in that vicinity. We are now on the ground where the rebs were a few days avon and fires are built in the same places theres were…

Our folks took a feb yesterday supposed to be an officer and spy. I saw them search him about all he had with him had once belonged to our men…

We are advancing slowly for the country has to be scouted in every direction by cavalry and the woods shelled by artillery before the main body goes forward. Our generals don’t mean to get into a trap…
