1862-S NGC AU53 $5 gold half eagle **SUPER RARE** ONLY 43 exist in ALL grades combined. here\'s one of the very rarest dates in the entire liberty half eagle series. of the original mintage of only 9,500 almost every one of them was used to death in the busy west and the rest were melted or likely traded for goods from the orient. today, the experts and scholars agree that less than 100 exist in all grades and conditions combined. this rare little lady has plenty of satiny luster and is an attractive bronze gold in color with lighter highlights around the periphery where the majority of the mint luster is, giving it a pretty halo effect and great eye appeal. the coin has just about the detail and luster of an average AU55 and it appears to be original and uncleaned. an almost impossible date to find in high grade and extremely rare in mint state with only a few graded between the top two TPGs. a super looking top of the grade piece to fill that empty hole in your set. just how rare is it? well, PCGS says that less than 100 1862-S half eagle exist in the entire world in any and all conditions. NGC has graded only 20 in all AU grades combined and they have graded only a mere 43 coins in all grades and conditions combined in their 30 years in the grading business, with many of those being re-submissions fishing for a higher grade and profit to the submitters. PCGS has graded only 12 in all AU grades combined in their 30 year history. stack these numbers up against any 1916-D dime, gem BU red 1909-S VDB cent or 1893-S Morgan dollar for relative rarity and sheer value. this is a real rarity and the price guides still haven\'t been updated on these after decades of being rather stagnant, likely because the market is so thin they trade too inoften. David Akers says the average grade for the issue, garnered from sale data, is VF-20, and every other reference I have read backs that up. this is a true numismatic treasure and the numbers show it. many numismatic researchers and scholars agree that if just several new collectors came into the series in a serious way, these would finally realize their true value due to the competition for super rare dates like this one. the NGC online price guide puts a AU53 at $16,350.00 and the Red Book puts it at $12,500.00 in AU50 and $20,000.00 in AU55, and this looks like 55 quality. no lowball offers will be considered on a coin this rare. with something like 500 or 600 registry sets of liberty half eagles on the top two TPG sites, this series is growing and gaining ground on the rest of the US series fast. with higher grades selling for significantly more, this may be the last time you see a moderately priced specimen offered for quite a while. fill that hole in your set and help me please my wife at the same time, a win/win if I ever saw one! please see the photos, they are of the exact coin that the buyer will receive.
