With the outbreak of the Civil War, Americans began hoarding all coinage. Stamps were used for money but quickly degraded with excessive handling. Bostonian inventor/ entrepreneurJohn Gault patented the embossed brasswith astamp encased behind clear mica on August 12, 1862. His encasements were short-lived as the U.S. government started to issue Postage Currency notes. Concurrent with their second run in 1863, the government ordered all other types of postage money to be turned in for exchange. Therefore, few of these brass, encased postage stampssurvived.This one has the ribbed edge with Thomas Jefferson on the five cent stamp.
