This is a lot of two handwritten Civil Wardated letters sent home by Abram Boothe to his mother. Both letters are a single sheet written oneside only in pencil. The first letter isdated April 26th, 1863 and the second is dated May 1st,1863. Both appear to have been writtenon the journey east from Alton to Virginia.The May 1st, 1863 letter begins:

“We areon our way to Virginia. We left Altonday before yesterday and Chicago yesterday morning for Pittsburgh via FortWayne…”

The April 26th letter is date lined“Alton” and indicates “…they say we willstop a day or two here”.

The first letter mentions a Martha andreceiving the two shirts and pants sent to him by his mother. The May 1st letter indicates thathis satchel was stolen and describes a bit of the landscape on the journey aswell as other information. Both lettersare signed “Abram Boothe”. I found somereferences to Civil War veterans with that name and also Abraham and“Booth”.

Both letters are fully complete andlegible. The April 26thletter is split along the fold lines into three pieces but still legible. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
