Patriotic Civil War Token

This attractive token was produced by the Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. This company still exists today under the name Scovill Fasteners, Inc. This firm was very active in the metals trade in the 19th century. In addition to creating more the two dozen dies used to strike patriotic Civil War tokens, this firm also began supplying bronze and nickel coin blanks to the U.S. Mint in 1866. The Scovill tokens were some of the highest quality tokens produced during the Civil War. The inspiration for the obverse of this token was the equestrian statue of George Washington installed in Manhattan\'s Union Square in 1856. The digital photo of this monument is circa 1870. This listing is for the token only.

This is one of several minor variations of this variety. This one is easily distinguishable from the others by the large date.
