Benjamin was a prominent New Orleans lawyer who joined the Confederate cause and was chosen for this high post because of his intelligence and dependability. He was also the only Jewish member of the Confederate Cabinet, thus obtaining the moniker \"the Confederate Jew.\" After the war, Benjamin escaped from Richmond to the Caribbean, and later lived in London. He never returned to the United States.
