Civil War Union Soldier Diary 118th Ohio Volunteer Infantry September 13, 1863 to May 18th, 1864

Approx. 7.5\" X 6\" Civil War Journal. Ledger rebacked with newer black leather spine. Original black leather corners. Original reddish marbled paper covered boards with black inscribed cover, \"J. S. Clum Ft. Recovery Ohio 1880.\" 10 loose, detached pages with a few more pages starting to pull away from binding. 65 pages of Civil War content starts midway through the ledger. The ledger also contains 30 pages used to record accounts, medical recipes, notes, etc. before and after the Civil War content. Hand written entries are legible and clean. Clum\'s regiment was in Loudon, Knoxville and Strawberry Plains Tennessee late 1863. On December 6th Clum records, \"Corporal Cary and Edward Hastrow (sp.?) returned from Chattanooga today. They report that Gen Thomas has completely annihilated Bragge\'s Army and is driving him toward Atlanta.\" December 29th entry describes heavy fighting. \"Heavy firing of Artillery and Musketry all morning. We expected to have hot work.Moved to the extreme right on the double quick, a distance of 1 1/2 miles.By this time the Rebs had got their Battery in position and commenced shelling us, and they put them in thick and fast falling around and among us.They now opened on us with grape and canister shot.After being under fire for 3 1/2 hours we were ordered to fall back.As we fell back our enemy withdrew and left us in possession of the field. Those of our wounded and dead [who reached enemy lines] was stripped of all their clothing even to their socks.\" Jesse C. Clum was mustered in the Army in April 1861 and served until July 1865. Clum\'s regiment fought in Georgia in the Battles of Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta. Their regiment also participated in the Battles of Waynesboro, Franklin Tennessee, Nashville, Fort Anderson, Town Creek, and Mosely Hall.
