Four volumes of this longstanding periodical The Month.

With a scarce early edition before the English Province of the Society of Jesus took over the magazine in April 1865.

The first volume, volume II of The Month is titled as the original publication was, The Month, An Illustrated Magazine of Literature, Science and Art. This volume has six illustrations.Frances Margaret Taylor, the original founder and editor ofThe Month is the editor of this volume. This is the last edition of themagazine that she edited.

Volumes II (January to June 1865), IV (January to June 1866), VII (July to December 1867) and IX (July to December 1868)of The Month.

Collated, complete.

Ex-library as indicated from the Franciscan Convent Library, Waterford stamp to all volumes.

VolumesIV, VII and IX all hold the subtitleof subsequent issues following Taylor\'s sale of the magazine, The Month Magazine and Review.All of these volumes are prior to The Month\'s incorporation of the Catholic Review.

The Month was a monthly periodical which ran for 139 years from 1864 to 2001. For most of its history the magazine was owned by the English Province of the Society of Jesus.

The editor ofvolumes IV,VII and IX was thefirst of the Jesuit editors, Henry James Coleridge. Coleridge brought many a success toThe Month and managed to enlist contributorswho were leading figures in English Catholicism.

CONDITION

In half calf bindings Externally, smart with rubbing to theextremities and to the joints. Headand tail of spines are rubbed. Front hinge to volume IX is slightlystrained but firm. Fronthinge to volume IV is slightly strained but firm with the rearhinge tender with cords showing.Both hinges to volume II are slightly strained but firm.Ex library stamp from the Franciscan Convent Library Waterford to therecto offrontendpapers and title pagesto allvolumes. some offsetting to the endpapers of all volumes. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with some age toning to edges and the odd spot throughout. Overall: GOOD.
