This letter dated 1865, U.S.S Gertrude, off the coast of Texas, is written by sailor William Young, wishing to get his pay sent to Ms. Maria Young....signed by William Young and Commander J. Newell. Letter is 6x9, overall good condition.

USSGertrude(1863)was the British by theUnion Navyduring theAmerican Civil War. She was placed in service by the Navy as agunboatand assigned to patrol the southern coast of theUnited Statesfor ships attempting to run the Union blockade of Southern ports. She was later the American merchant shipGussie Telfairuntil wrecked in 1880.

Beginning in May 1864,Gertrudewas assigned to blockade theTexascoast, and spent most of the next year offGalveston, Texas. She visited blockading stations offSabine PassandVelasco, Texas, and took blockade runnerEcooff Galveston 19 February 1865.

Gertrudealso captured over 50 bales of cotton 19 April 1865 which were thrown overboard by famous Confederate blockade runnerDenbighduring her escape from the blockading fleet.
