1866 Steinway Grand Piano, Rosewood, square-end, artistic caseSerial No. 13807, Privately Owned and loved for 41 years; ideal for a grand or historic home or museum anywhere in the world. The case is in excellent condition with gloss finish and it plays well; 7’2” in length, 85 keys, 2 pedals;
Rosewood artistic-case, refinished in 1976 and in 1998 in gloss, excellent condition; no chips, marks or damage; Restored in 1976 with new strings, hammers, action work by a retired Steinway technician in Atlantic City, NJ; Plays well, has been tuned every 3 months for the past 4 years; In October 2011, an historian at Steinway & Sons in New York City, told me that this piano was built in New York City in 1866 and originally went to a Steinway dealer in Philadelphia; he also said that a sister piano with a similar serial number resides in the Smithsonian Institution;
According to the Steinway technician who rebuilt the piano in 1976, when I bought it, this piano was acquired from the John Wanamaker family (owner of a department store chain) in Philadelphia; The second restoration of mechanical and case was done over 6 months, 1997-98, by an authorized Steinway technician in his shop in Louisville, KY: New strings, pin block shaved to slide in/out more easily, Damper set (new, Steinway), hammers (new, Steinway), keytops (natural); regulate action; shank exchange installed; let-off wood replaced (10), hammer screw parts (set); drop - screw exchange (set); action dimension (re-set); pedal lyre rebuilt;
I am aware of only two possible defects:1) In 2013, I was advised by my piano tuner that “a few pins in the pin block were slipping,” thus, he advised that it might need to be tuned every few months instead of once a year; 2) In 2017, a Steinway dealer advised me that the music desk and lid prop are not period-correct.
In 2001 the appraised value was $60,000, and in 2015 for $70,000-80,000.
Weight is approximately 850 pounds; it can be shipped anywhere in the world. Approximate cost to ship from the East Coast to the West Coast of the U.S. is approximately $1,450. Shipping in a crate to Asia is approximately $5,000. The price does not include shipping, Buyer pays shipping.
I am selling because I have retired to a smaller home and no longer have room for this beloved instrument.I am seeking the best possible home for it.
