AN HISTORIC AMERICAN NATIONAL TREASURE!

Original 1867 Large 37 Star American Flag / Ship\'s Ensign measuring 12\' Feet by 6\' Feet! This Flag is Marked \"AMERICAN ENSIGN 12FT.\" and also has the Maker\'s Name which I believe is U.S. BUNTING COMPANY in Lowell, Massachusetts\" and a Signature of someone in Ink, but I can\'t quite make it out.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In March 1865, General Benjamin F. Butler incorporated the United States Bunting Company and began producing Flag bunting in a factory within the works of the newly established Wamesit Power Company in Lowell, Massachusetts. U. S. Bunting quickly became the most successful manufacturer of bunting cloth in the United States.General Butler exploited his ties with members of Congress and military officials to garner government contracts with his company. In 1866 his agent, De Witt C. Farrington, presented the Senate with a large American Flag (21 by 12 feet), produced by the bunting company, to fly over the U.S. Capitol. It was reportedly the first Flag of American-manufactured bunting to be hoisted over the capitol building.THIS 1867 Flag IS ONE OF THE VERY FIRST U.S. NAVY SAILING SHIP\'S ENSIGNS MADE IN AMERICA WITH AMERICAN MADE BUNTING!!! (and I wish I could make out the Signature in Ink, probably somebody Famous!)

THE 37-STAR Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th 1867! A star was added for the admission of Nebraska (March 1st,1867) and was to last for ten years. The three Presidents who served under this Flag were; Andrew Johnson (1865-1869), Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877), and Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881).
