Reconstruction Era letter from Fair Play, SC, with startling news about events in the area.

4pp from Bettie Stephens to sister, Oct. 29, 1867.. The front and back of the letter have stains, but paper appears clean. About a dozen words affected.

Spelling rough, slightly corrected:

\"The freedman have been holding a...league ten or fifteen miles from hear. I recon you have heard of their lodge close bye. There was some boys & men debating, came on a man by where they was debating & shot of[f] a gun. I suppose the freedmen heard it & rushed to the debating room. The one that wasdebating sliped out & the freedmen shot him & killed him. Thare was white men in to it too. They have got nearly all of them in jail. They will hang no doubt &that will put a stop to their league...I think they are to hang the negros & burn the White men.\"

Background: The aboveprob. refersto the Oct. 12, 1867 fatal shooting of Miles M.N.Hunnicutt, Pendleton, Pickens District. Six freedmen were found guilty & sentenced to be hung Dec. 6, 1867.
