Very rare and original, 1868 Ulysses S. Grant / Schuyler Colfax Illustrated Presidential Election Ballot from the State of Maryland including the party platform plank - “Opposed to Repudiation”. The Ballot lists the Republican Party slate of candidates for Presidential and Vice Presidential Electors and the Republican candidate for the House of Representatives from the 4th congressional district only (no other candidates for any other State, District or County Office are listed on the Ballot).

This wonderful presidential Campaign ballot measures approx. 3”\" by 6\" and features an image of the scales of justice. Text above the image reads “National Union Republican Ticket” and text below the image reads \"For President,...Ulysses S. Grant\" and “For Vice President,...Schuyler Colfax”. Below the central images are listed the names of the Republican Party Slate of Presidential Electors from the State of Maryland in 1868.

From 1865 to 1870, a crisis atmosphere hovered around the issue of the massive public debt created during the recently concluded Civil War, leading, in part, to the passage of a Constitutional Amendment ensuring the “validity of the public debt.” However, the Civil War debt crisis was not a financial one, but a political one. The Republican and Democratic Parties took concerns over the public debt and magnified them into panics so that they could serve political ends — there was never any real danger that the United States would default on its debt for financial reasons.

This rare and very attractive Presidential Campaign Ballot is in very good condition with a very light water stain and some light, uniform age toning but with no tears, edge wear, repairs or physical damage of any kind.
