This is an old receipt for a payment to a laborer named Charles Pickering.The payment was made by the Old Colony and Newport Railroad
Company, which operated in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.The receipt consists of two pieces of paper that are pinned together.
At one time the small piece was glued to the larger piece. The top
left corner of the smaller piece was subsequently torn off, and
remains glued to the larger piece. There are several signatures on this document.The receipt is signed in pencil by at the bottom right corner
by an agent of the railroad named H. B. Danforth. The laborer, Charles Pickering, has signed the document.And Pickering\'s foreman, a man named George H. Melvin,
has also signed the document (in pencil).George H. Melvin (1833-1906) was born in the New Hampshire
town of Warner, located in Merrimack County. He fought for
the Union during the Civil War, as a member of the Sixteenth
New Hampshire Regiment. He enlisted as a private, and was
promoted to corporal, and then to sergeant. Afterwards, he
worked for several different railroad companies. He is buried
in the Palmer Street Cemetery in Somerset, Massachusetts.
