Transylvania County, 1870This is a legal document dated in 1870 in relation to a criminal case in Transylvania County, North Carolina. It is a printed form which was filled out in ink over 140 years ago. It is a bill from Deputy Marshal, Henry Cameron (not sure of this name, as his handwriting is not too legible) to S. T. Carrow, U.S. Marshal, for expenses involved in performing his duties in the criminal case of the United States vs. L. F. Fisher.The document shows Fisher was “Charged with illicit Distilling and Retailing.” In other words, he was a moonshiner in the mountains of western North Carolina! The document says Deputy Marshal Cameron is due $2.00 for “serving Warrant upon Defendant”, plus $4.08 in travel expenses, at a rate of 6 cents a mile for the 68 miles, one way, involved in serving the Warrant at Fisher\'s residence in Jackson County, N.C.The document measures 8.5 x 14 inches in size, and is in reasonably good shape. It has some light browning from age, and smudging along its edges; plus the paper is weak along three old fold lines, with the beginnings of short edge tears at these folds.The document remains fully legible, although the original handwriting is not easy to read in places.**************
