1870s GUSTAV BECKER Double Weight, Long Case Vienna Regulator: SOLID Oak Case:

For the antique clock collector or Gustav Becker fancier: A wonderful 1870s vintage, Gustav Becker (Braunau factory) long case Vienna Regulator in the \"Alt Deutsch\" (full door pilasters) style, with a solid oak case.Gustav Eduard Becker was a German-trained Clock Master who lived in the Eastern portion of pre-WWI Germany\'s Suddentenland in the region known as Silesia (presently the Czech Republic). The clockwork and case were personally cleaned, repaired, adjusted, lubricated and regulated. The movement is doubled SIGNED on the back plate \"Gustav Becker, Braunau in Bohemia,\" with GB Crown and Anchor trademark on the left and \"Medaille de\' Or\" (gold medal) with Maltese cross and inset flower on the right. The extant brass winding crank will wind the clock but is not original. The clockwork features several technical characteristics which are designed to impress. The most obvious is the double weighted, chiming clockwork and the ornate brass dial pan with silver chapter ring, serpentine hands, and inset silver female figure, such that the clock hands appear to be her \"arms.\" Weight-driven clocks keep time more accurately than mainspring-driven clockworks, as the torque on the time drive line is constant and does not decrease as spring tension relaxes. This clock work is well-regulated to my ATOMIX master clock, keeps highly accurate time (seconds per week), and has full drive power restored in the gliding, pendulum swing following cleaning, lubrication, verge adjustment and close regulation. The clock case dimensions are 55.5 inches tall (tip of crown finial to base of pediment), 14 inches wide and 8 inches deep. The serial number cannot be accurately dated as all production records from the Braunau factory were destroyed in a structure fire in 1873. Becker subsequently relocate to Freiburg, Silesia and continued production until \'sacked buyout\' (a German banking term for hostile takeover) by JUNGHANS Brothers in 1926.
Movement: Solid brass, full, two plate, heavy gauge (4 mm thick ), cut pinion, time and strike movement (photo 11 &12) on a backplate-mounted, heavy gauge, steel coil gong (photo 11). The clock is a 2/2 chime, striking the half hour once and the hour count on the full hour. The movement was taken down, disassembled, sonic cleaned, all shaft pivots were inspected for wear and buff polished, strike hammer adjusted, chime line synchronized, and the escapement adjusted. The pendulum suspension spring was broken from metal fatigue and replaced with a brand new stainless steel suspension, The pendulum shaft is wooden with a solid brass pendulum escutcheon and hanger. The large 60mm diameter brass bob is also lead weighted with rating nut to make Fast/Slow adjustments. The dial face (photo 4) is a two-piece, concentric, brass and silvered chapter ring in Arabic numerals. The verge has adjustable steel pallets for maximum power transfer from the escapement wheel to the pendulum leader. The pendulum leader has a left-right screw type beat adjustment on the pendulum leader pin. The 7.0 inch dial face is unblemished and very clean. It is free of marks and has dark black numerals and hands, There are also vertical wall stabilizers to \"plumb\" the case to an irregular wall surface.
PLEASE NOTE: A 140+ year-old clock mechanism like this can be \"fussy\" Victorian-era technology requires dexterity, patience, and basic knowledge of pendulum clocks. Leveling and plumbing the case is vital for reliable performance and well-rewarded with precision (seconds) accuracy in timekeeping. This is not a battery-operated, \"hang it and forget it for a year\" electronic oscillating timekeeper. The mechanism TICKS loudly and requires a weekly windup. The gong strikes incessantly 24/7 but also has a mellow, resonant, deep tone on the clockwork-mounted metal coil gong in the oak case. As with most mechanical devices with rotating gear trains, it also requires bi-annual lubrication with a quality clock oil. If you live in a very cold or arid locale it will require more frequent lubrication.Expect to spend about 45 minutes to properly unpack the cartons, hang and level the case, hang the weights. wind the clock, set the correct time, adjust the beat of the pendulum and regulate the works to a master clock. I will provide very detailed, step-by-step setup and regulating instructions. You will receive decades of reliable, accurate time keeping in your home from Gustav Becker, a highly-revered German clock company.
Case: The solid oak case has its original golden patina and features a brass, 4 pillar latch mount, vertical wall stability adjustment screws, and porcelain beat plaque. The case also has a front RH swinging door, with a hook and eyelet \"latch\" on the case frame. Some split wood damage to the scroll work of the pediment was clamped up and glued for repair. The brass pediment ornaments (the Cherub and small brass rosettes) are NOT original, but the pediment was very plain and never had lower finials.
Case dimensions: Length (top of crown center finial to base of pediment ) 55 inches; 14 inch width, and 8 inches indepth. Pendulum swing is 1.5 inches and drop (from the suspension spring) is 24 inches.
Shipping: Careful, secure, crated packaging and FEDEX ground shipment will take 2-3 business days and is expensive. Local pickup would be optimal and less likely to create damage. Clock weight is about 30 lbs without the necessary packing, bracing and padding material. I ship fine clocks in doubled individual cartons. Claims experience with damaged antique clocks has taught me not to ship UPS (they throw boxes) and I always have minimal issues with FEDEX.
offers: Paypal Preferred, , 10 day sale, NO International buyers or shipping other than to APO or FPO addresses. My response rating is 100% in my 15th year with . This clock and its components are almost all original and in stunning condition, both technically and aesthetically. It bears the trademark of, unquestionably, one of the premier 18th century German clock houses. Gustav Becker earned his reputation and produced fine quality movements and ornate wooden cases and is renowned in the horologic community as one of the leading European manufacturers of fine clocks. The quality of craftsmanship is excellent and visually evident in the photos. Thanks for your interest.
