1870\'s PUFFIN HUNTER TINTYPE PHOTO - HUNTER w/ GUN, POWDERHORN AND PUFFIN DECOY:
$304.99

Simply fantastic and original, 1870\'s, CDV size Tintype Photograph of a hunter who we have come to refer to as “The Puffin Hunter” - he sits holding his fowling rifle across his lap, wearing a great powder horn around his neck and holding a wonderful decoy nestled in the crook of his left arm - a Decoy fashioned in the form of a Puffin!! Certainly a Puffin Hunter in the United States would be seriously frowned upon by law enforcement today and apparently it was fellows like this one who contributed to the decline of the Puffin populations.

This simply amazing, American Sporting subject Tintype Photo measures approx. 2 1/8\" by 3 1/2\" and is mounted in its original, CDV size paper mount (overall size of mount is 2 1/2“ by 4”). It depicts the Hunter seated in a photographer’s studio wearing a heavy coat and a thin brimmed hat. His rifle, powder horn and Puffin Decoy are prominently displayed

This outstanding Tintype came to us as part of a wonderful collection of Western and Firearms Subject Tintypes, CDV’s and Cabinet Cards which we are selling this week and next on . It is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period and comes with our usual lifetime guarantee of authenticity and “no questions asked” return privilege. Be sure to check out this seller’s other sales for a number of other fantastic 19th century Photographs from this small but wonderful collection!!!

Although we have handled quite a few 19th century Photographs of Hunters over the past 33+ years, we have seen less than a handful in which the hunter displayed a decoy and have never heard of an image that included a Puffin Decoy. We can only imagine the astronomical value of the beautiful, folk art Puffin Decoy displayed in this Tintype if it appeared on the market today - we are unsure if any 19th century Puffin Decoys have survived and the Photo offered here is a rare opportunity to at least get a glimpse of this wonderful Decoy.

This outstanding, American Puffin Hunting Tintype Photo is in excellent condition. The Photo exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The surface is stable with no significant surface crazing, no bends, no scratches and only a couple of tiny and unobtrusive surface blemishes. The paper CDV mount is well preserved - opened at the lower right hand corner to allow for full inspection of the edges of the Tintype (easily closed again) and with a small ink spot at the lower left hand corner and some spotting on the reverse. Overall this outstanding Tintype is exceptionally well preserved and displays beautifully.

A very rare and simply fantastic, 1870’s Tintype Photograph of “The Puffin Hunter” and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
