Offered is this gorgeous heirloom, a large antique Family Bible bound in a heavy leather cover with inlaid gold, containing many, many \"extras\". The binding is stunningly beautiful!This Holy Bible was published in New York by Henry S. Goodspeed & Co some time in the late 1800s. While it is undated, most pages indicate that it was printed in 1876, even though it states that it was awarded an Honorable Mention at the American Institute Exhibition in November, 1873.
In addition to the expected Old & New Testaments, the Bible also contains among many extra features, such as Apocrypha, Concordance, Psalms, a history of each book of the O.T. and N.T., an illustrated Bible dictionary, maps, a large fold-out panoramic view of Jerusalem, cities of the Bible, illustrations of Biblical antiquities, animals, etc., a full-page color Lord\'s Prayer and blank marriage certificate and even two heavy stock pages to hold photographs. The Bible text is arranged in a two-column format, with a chronology in between. This is a family Bible and there are a few birth, death and marriage entries but not many. There are an amazing 1,200 illustrations (according to the title page), some full-page.
I have seen quite a few antique Bibles but I have never seen one as elaborate as this one, an amazing book despite the damage. This is apparently a VERY rare Bible; at the time of original listing I couldn\'t find any other Bibles from the 1800s by this publisher for sale anywhere.
This is a very large, thick and heavy Bible measures approx. 12 1/2\" x 10 1/2\" and is nearly 4\" thick. There are well over 1,000 gilt-edged pages, hard to tell exactly as the different sections are separately numbered, but the O.T. and N.T. are consecutively numbered and contain 836. The brass clasp is present, but the leather connecting strap is gone. The binding is close to perfect - no renovations necessary! Some of the full-page illustrations are very clear and sharp while others do have foxing. Most have their tissue paper separators intact. There are no missing pages or large tears, and there is no writing in the text areas although as noted there is a gift inscription and some family history written in appropriate locations.
This Bible is very heavy (over 12 lbs.) so shipping will be rather expensive, but I always offer free shipping! Get it while it lasts!!!
