1878 Resch Brothers, long case (80 cm), double weight, Vienna regulator in the \"Alt Deutsch\" style. Movement is signed \"Remember\" and \"O.V.R.M.Co\" with the \"GR\" trademark logo and numbered (100000 + 60633) in a ornately carved, original case with Edelweiss floral motifs on the crown topper and pediment. Case is ebonized with an inset panel on the case back wall, and back flashes on the crown and pediment. Original hands on the dial; however the winding crank is an after-market type (i.e. not original). Both the case and the movement are in exceptional condition given their age (see photos).Movement: The double weight movement strikes the half hour and counts the full hour on a coiled gong. The movement was disassembled, sonically cleaned, reassembled and adjusted. The movement is a very accurate time keeper, which has been closely regulated to my master clock. The movement is pristine with no evidence of silver soldered repairs. (See the photos). I am estimating the date of manufacture based on the serial number of the clockwork. The Resch brothers moved their manufacturing from Vienna to Ebensee, Austria in 1871, following the death of their father Lorenzo Resch, who was one of three, court-appointed clock-makers to King Ferdinand of the Austria-Hungary empire in Vienna. The three brothers purportedly place the inscription \"Remember\" on all the Ebensee clockworks as a memorial to their late father. Resch movements are renowned among horologists for their simplicity and precision gear trains matching the quality of Lenzkirch and exceeding that of Gustav Becker for factory-produced mechanisms. Weight driven clocks are far more accurate throughout the let down cycle, because the torque on the time drive-line is consistent, unlike spring driven (mainspring) clocks, whose torque decreases as the spring unwinds. Close inspection of the movement reveals matching serial numbers on the front plate, back plate, latch mount plate, pendulum hanger, and dial pan. This numbering was a quality control technique in the factory to keep all clock work components together. The technique is necessary because the solid cast, steel verge and brass pendulum leader are hand-balanced (poised) for each mechanism for precision oscillation. Matching serial numbers are the hallmark evidence that these 5 movement components have remained together for over 138 years. Exceptions noted during movement overhaul: Some minor damage (dent) on the brass dial bezel at the 6 o\'clock position and hairlines in the porcelain chapter ring between Roman numeral 1 and 2 and between 4 and 5. The hour and minute hand are original Resch brothers. The plain brass weight shells have several dents and scratches. The fancy pulleys are correct and embossed with a floral motif. The clock is strung with 50# fishing line, which technically is incorrect.Casework: Some chips and cracks in the veneer above the door (see photos). The crown topper floral motif matches the pediment. Very ornately carved pilaster door columns and original front and side glasses. Finials on the pediment and crown match. Vertical stabilizer hardware on both sides of the pediment, but not the original, fluted Resch type. Original enameled porcelain beat plaque. Maximum case dimensions: 52 inches height (tip of crown finial to bottom tip of pediment) 18.5 inches width (at the crown), and 7.5 inches deep. There is a small hole in the case rail stile on the 3 o\'clock side for the repeater pull cord to be positioned outside of the case. The upper right return molding on the \"egg and drop\" crown has been repaired (long ago) and very well restored with plain oak molding that is not original (see the last photo). The repair was well done and is non-distracting, but is a condition exception that should be disclosed. Shipping & Delivery: Is expensive in order to adequately package, insure, and protect the 138 year old case from damage. I will provide detailed written instructions for hanging the clock, setup, beat adjustment and Fast/Slow regulation. If you live within a 200 mile radius of Champaign, IL (e.g Chicago, Indy, St. Louis or the Quad Cities) I can deliver the clock and set it up for the shipping cost. I only use FEDEX for shipping. I have had 3 clocks damaged in shipment by UPS. I lived in southern Germany for 6 years and know the Black Forest clock-making region and the manufacturers well. I have repaired and reconditioned antique European clocks for over 20 years. Please message me with any questions. Thanks, Rick
