As regards restoration, leather starts failing after 100 years depending on usage. Any large Victorian Bible exceeding this age almost invariably will need the front and back covers reattached to the body of the Bible using new leather.

On display is a unique copy of an 1878 Old and New Testament Bible with Apocrypa.This Bible was printed in New York by the American Publishing Company, 22 Park Place. It contains a table of Scripture, Weights and Coins, a table of Kindred and Affinity, a table of Time and much, much more. Foxing is presentthroughoutas shown in the pictures above, all of which is an expected condition of age. The Bible has had the front and back cover as well as spine professionally reattached. The original spine was able to be saved and has been reattached in order to preserve the integrity of the Bible.

The covers show beautiful gold leaf on front and back with deep inlay scenes embossed into the covers. The gold embossed patterns are 24 karat gold and very intricate in design and can be seen in the pictures above. Holy Bible is inlaid on the spine as well as front and back covers. The spine shows 5 raised bands along with gold inlay inset panels.The color is a beautiful deep mahogany with the gold embossing set against it. The top edge of the front cover has been rounded off. Please check pictures to verify. Gold gilt page edging is present albeit with a gently faded luster that time and the centuries have bestowed upon it.The clasps work and have been polished and restored to their original beauty.

This is a unique example of a Victorian Bible and while not having checked every page it does appear to becomplete. It measures 12 1/4\" x 10 1/2 \" x 3 1/2\". This is a very large family bible weighing in at just over 11 pounds. There is a section for family history located in the middle of the Bible. None is present.There is also a section for family photos located in the rear. It is in a state of disrepair but was left in to preserve the integrity of the Bible. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age.

This is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history in the form of an authentic Victorian Bible printed in the 1800\'s. It would make an exellent display piece that could be opened to any of the magnificent pictures inside, or Title Pages, or left closed to show the spectacular gold inlay covers.
