ARTIFACT:This is a cool 1887 warden-signed letter from the Massachusetts State Prison in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The subject of the letter concerns a request for one of the inmates, known as “General Moses”, to furnish his autograph, and it is signed by Warden (Captain) E.J. (Edward Justin) Russell, a Civil War veteran. Russell enlisted with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in July 1861 and was promoted to Captain only one and a half years later. After a period of disability, Russell then served with the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. After the war he became a Deputy Sheriff, and later, Warden.

CONDITION:7 (Very Fine): The letter has minor aging and some creasing and two pinholes; there is a very short tear along the central crease.
