My wife took me to the Antiques Road Show\'s \"Chesapeake Collectibles\" for my birthday and this was one of the three items that I had appraised. The appraiser spent so much time looking at it I thought we were going to be on the show for sure!This lunch box was made Larrabee\'s in the 1890\'s and is shaped like a book. It is made of tin and one side opens and closes so that one\'s lunch could be placed inside.I asked the appraiser .... why would a lunch box be shaped like a book? He explained that during this time period many people in the population were illiterate. That being said it was common for illiterate families to own sets of books which they would proudly display. They might also own a particular set of furniture that was thought to bring prestige. Many photographs during this time would include the family staged in front of their books or furniture which they were so proud of. This lunch box hearkens back to that time and the book shape is reminiscent of those values. The lunch box has patina and rust as you might expect from a used item this age. The lid opens and closes smoothly. It turns out that the lunch box is not very valuable and we did not get to be on the show. It was a really nice time though and if you ever get a chance to attend one of Antique Road Show\'s events in your area you really should go!Please look at the pictures closely and feel free to ask any questions.Payment: PAYPAL ONLY PLEASE!
