1890s Figural Pocket Match Safe Vesta In The Form Of An Ape Or Monkey:
Rare and wonderful, 1890's Figural Pocket Match Safe / Vesta in the form of an Ape or monkey smoking a pipe. This outstanding Figural Match Safe measures approx. 2 3/4" tall and 1 3/8" at its widest point. It is made of brass and retains approx. 90%+ of its original nickel plated surface. The Safe features a wonderful, highly embossed, three dimensional image of an Ape that looks amazingly like the anthropomorphic "characters" from the "Planet of the Apes", enjoying a "good smoke" from a long stemmed pipe. My wife's first thought upon seeing this Match Safe was that it was a "monkey playing a saxophone" - it does look a bit like that!!
The Match Safe (or Vesta as these pocket match safes are sometimes called) is in very good to excellent condition. The "push-button" closure mechanism is in excellent, working condition and the hinge spring is strong. The lid opens and closes tightly and squarely. There are no breaks or cracks in the metal and as stated above, the Match Safe retains the vast majority of its original nickel plating with a small areas of loss to the plating around the push-button. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the form and condition of this wonderful, 19th century Pocket Match Safe!!!
PLEASE NOTE: This Match Safe / Vesta is 100%, unconditionally guaranteed to be the original issue. It is not a reissue, reproduction or of later manufacture than stated above. It comes with our unconditional return policy and life time guarantee of authenticity!!
A rare and exceptionally attractive, 19th century Figural Pocket Match Safe / Vesta in the form of an Ape / Monkey smoking a pipe and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
