1890s Framed Original Stevengraph Silk Woven Picture of Graf Moltke (very rare):

Very rare, original Thomas Stevens made silk woven picture - Stevengraph - Graf Moltke (recorded as STG 113 - an 8 star rarity (1 common, 8 rarest)) Over mounted and framed (new frame). The mount has the printed \'Woven in Pure Silk by T. Stevens, Coventry\' credit but may not be original.

Moltke (Hellmuth Carl Bernard Moltke) was born in 1800 and died in 1891. He was the Chief of the General Staff of the Prussian Army and the architect of Prussian\'s military supremacy.

Beautifully presented in a dark green mount and wood frame.

The silk weaving size is 2.3 x 4.5 inches approx. - The frame size is approximately 8 x 11 inches (approximately)

The wordStevengraph was coined by Thomas Stevens of Coventry, England who adapted his jacquard looms to produce multi-coloured images in pure silk. Silk bookmarks were produced fromthe early 1860s and the pictures and portraits from 1879. Fewer and fewer are appearing for sale these days so they are becoming quite scarce. Mr Stevens had many rivals but hisweavings are considered to bethe best.

Condition - The colours are quite well preserved. As mentioned, the mount is probably not original. There is nothing of interest on the back.
