This hard to find medal is a souvenir of the 1893 Columbian Exposition, the World\'s Fair in Chicago, Illinois, and it is classified as a so-called dollar (SCD HK-174). It is named a \'world globe dollar\' because each side has a design set against a world globe. The obverse has a \'bird\'s eye view\' of the expo grounds, with the words WORLD\'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO, 1892-3 in the lower part of the image. Along the rim are the words WORLD\'S FAIR SOUVENIR. The reverse side has a detailed image (including ten men!) titled LANDING OF COLUMBUS IN AMERICA OCTOBER 12TH 1492. Along the lower rim arethe words PAT\'D DEC. 1, 1891.The very complex and very detailed design of this medal was expressed quite well during the minting process. This medal was produced in two thicknesses, and this is the thicker type, with the rim being approximately 3.5 mm thick. This item was holed for use as a fob. This medal is composed of aluminum, and it measures approximately 44 mm (1-3/4\") in diameter (therefore termed a so-called dollar).

This item is in very good condition, with fairly light wear, signs of handling, toning, and limited soiling, and it largely is a bright silver color.

The illustrations in this listingare photos of the actual item being offered for sale, serving as part of the description. NOTE: The actual medal is much lighter in color and much brighter than is evident in the photos.
