1893 medal issued for the Columbian Expo, held in Chicago. The medal opens up from the reverse to reveal a chamber for a locket. This particular medal has a picture of a young lady under a protective layer of mica. Rumor has it that these were sometimes called \"opium dollars\" and were used to smuggle opium. They were sold at the exposition as lockets. Stamped \"Sterling\" under the lady\'s portrait. Excellent condition. Obverse shows bust of Columbus in soft cap, Spanish and U.S. Arms to either side of head. Reverse shows the Exposition Administration Building. There are no pry marks. The medal is in extremely fine condition. 1½\".
